Detailing guides

Technique costs nothing and matters more than product choice. These are the pages that make the product pages useful.

By Mike M.Updated

How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Sequence beats skill

Almost every expensive detailing mistake is a step taken out of order rather than a step done badly. Claying before the iron remover, polishing before claying, coating before correcting, dressing tires before washing — each of those undoes work you have already paid for in time.

Which is why the order of operations is the spine of this site, and why most pages here assume a specific position in that sequence rather than standing alone.

The five stages

  • Wash — every one to two weeks, and the stage where almost all paint damage happens.
  • Decontaminate — twice a year, and it changes how the paint feels.
  • Correct — every two to four years, and the only stage that spends clear coat.
  • Protect — two to four times a year, and an hour each time.
  • Maintain — every wash, and ten minutes.

The full model is on DIY car detailing.

What these guides will not tell you

That we tested any of this ourselves. We have not — this site is written from published manufacturer data and the consistent patterns in verified-purchase reports, and every page says so. The technique guides are different in kind: a two-bucket wash works because of how grit behaves, not because of a product claim.

Questions people actually ask

What order should you detail a car in?
Wheels, pre-rinse, foam, contact wash, rinse, dry, iron remover, clay, correct, panel wipe, protect, trim and tires, glass. Each step removes something the next would otherwise drag across the paint — see the order of operations.
What is the most important detailing skill?
Washing without putting grit back on the paint. Almost every swirl mark on a car was created during a wash or a dry, which means the technique that prevents them is worth more than any product on this site.
How long does a full detail take?
Three to four hours for a maintenance detail, five to six if the paint needs decontaminating, and a full weekend if it needs correcting. The correction is what turns a long morning into two days.
