About detailing
These are real queries, recovered from live search autocomplete rather than invented. Where an answer deserves more than a paragraph, it links to the page that gives it one.
Questions people actually ask
- What should I buy first to start detailing my car?
- Two buckets, two grit guards, a deep-pile wash mitt and a plush drying towel. That set prevents more paint damage than anything else you can buy and costs a fraction of a polisher. The starter kit guide sets out the full buying order.
- What order should you detail a car in?
- Wheels, pre-rinse, foam, contact wash, rinse, dry, iron remover, clay, correct, panel wipe, protect, trim and tires, glass. Almost every expensive detailing mistake is a step taken out of order — see the order of operations.
- Does the two bucket method really make a difference?
- Yes, and it is the highest-return change available because it costs almost nothing. With one bucket, every dunk reloads the mitt with the grit you just removed. The two bucket method has the full sequence.
- Is a ceramic coating worth it?
- If you hand-wash the car, keep it for years, and have somewhere dry to cure it, yes — washing gets genuinely easier and the gloss lasts. If the car sees brush washes or is leased, a sealant or spray coating is the better buy. The full answer.
- Can a beginner use a dual action polisher safely?
- Yes — a dual action stalls under excessive pressure rather than digging in, which is the design's whole point. Tape your edges and badges, keep the pad flat, work a small section at a time. How to use one.
- How often should you wax your car?
- Test it rather than scheduling it. Spray a clean panel with water: tight beads mean the protection is working, a flat sheet means it has gone. In practice carnauba lasts four to eight weeks outdoors and a sealant four to eight months. More.
- Do you need a pressure washer for a foam cannon?
- Yes. A cannon is designed around the pressure and flow a pressure washer produces and makes nothing usable on a garden hose. The hose-fed equivalent is a foam gun — compared here.
- How do you know if your car needs claying?
- Put your hand in a plastic sandwich bag and run it over washed, dried paint. Rough means clay; smooth means skip it, because claying smooth paint adds marring and removes nothing. How to clay a car.
- Can you use dish soap to wash a car?
- You can, and it strips every bit of wax and sealant along with the dirt. That is useful before applying a coating and harmful otherwise. A pH-neutral automotive shampoo costs very little per wash — the picks.
- What causes swirl marks?
- Dragging grit across the clear coat, almost always during washing or drying. Automatic washes with brushes are the fastest cause. Weather and sunlight do not cause swirl marks. How to remove them, and stop them returning.
- Can you use all purpose cleaner on a car interior?
- On carpet, mats and durable plastics, diluted, yes. On a soft-touch dash, leather, Alcantara or screens, no — APC lifts those coatings permanently. Dilution ratios by surface.
- Why does my tire shine sling onto the paint?
- Too much product, on a tire that was not fully clean, driven before it flashed. Two thin coats with a pad, ten minutes apart, essentially eliminates it. The method.
- What wheel cleaner is safe for my wheels?
- On painted or clear-coated alloy, an iron-dissolving cleaner. On black or satin finishes, a pH-neutral one. On polished or anodized aluminum, never anything acidic. Finish by finish.
- Have you tested the products you recommend?
- No, and every page says so at the top. Our picks are built from published manufacturer specifications, cited on the page, plus the patterns across verified-purchase reports. There is no hands-on evidence tier on this site. How we pick.
- Where do your prices come from?
- An automated refresh pulls them from Amazon and writes them into a data file. They carry the date they were checked and expire after 48 hours, after which the button falls back to Check price rather than showing a stale number.
- How does this site make money?
- Iron Mako Media earns an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. There is no sponsored content and no product line of our own. The full disclosure.
- Why are there no customer reviews on this site?
- Because we have none, and inventing them would make everything else here untrustworthy. A page with no testimonials is a complete page; a page with fabricated ones is a broken site. Our editorial policy.
- How do I report something that looks wrong?
- Email us with the page and the specific figure. We check it against the manufacturer's published data and either correct the page with a dated note or explain why it stands. Contact.
