Wheels, tires & trim
The dirtiest part of the car, cleaned with the harshest chemicals available. Matching the cleaner to the finish is what stops a wheel being ruined.

Our top pick in this section: the SONAX SONAX Wheel Cleaner Full Effect.
How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Wheel cleaners come in three chemistries and they are not interchangeable. Using the aggressive one on the wrong finish does damage that no polish reverses, because the damage is to the finish itself rather than to a layer on top of it.
| Chemistry | What it is for | What it destroys |
|---|---|---|
| pH-neutral | Routine cleaning on any finish, including coated wheels | Nothing. It is also the slowest on baked-on brake dust. |
| Iron-dissolving | Bonded brake dust; the color change is the reaction | Nothing, if rinsed before it dries. Never let it dry. |
| Acidic | Heavy neglect, bare or painted steel, commercial work | Polished and anodized aluminum, chrome trim, bare alloy. Permanently. |
For almost every home detailer with painted or clear-coated alloy wheels — which is almost every modern car — a pH-neutral or iron-dissolving cleaner is the correct and permanent answer. Acid belongs in a commercial setting with trained hands. Wheel cleaner types compared goes finish by finish.
A good wheel cleaner loosens; a brush removes. The gap between a tidy wheel and a genuinely clean one is almost entirely about whether you reached the barrel, and no chemical reaches the barrel for you.
The ranked brushes are on wheel brushes, and the ordered routine is on how to clean wheels and tires.
Sling — the arc of dressing flung up the side of the car on the first drive — is what makes people give up on tire shine. It is almost never the product's fault. It is caused by applying too much, applying it to a tire that was not fully clean, and not letting it flash before driving.
Water-based dressings give a satin finish and sling far less; solvent-based ones give the wet-look gloss and sling more. No sling vs high gloss is the honest comparison, and the application method is on how to apply tire shine without sling.
Faded black plastic trim is oxidized, which means the surface itself has degraded. Dressings make it look wet for a week and then it fades back, which is why people conclude nothing works. What actually works is a dye-based restorer that re-pigments the plastic, or a trim coating that seals it — both of which need the trim genuinely clean and dry first.
Products and realistic expectations are on trim restorers, with the method on how to restore faded trim.
