How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

The verdict
The Rag Company Eagle Edgeless 500 for anything that touches paint. Edgeless construction removes the single most common scratch source, and 500 GSM is the right general-purpose weight. Keep a bulk pack of cheap towels for wheels and jambs so the good ones never go near them.
02
Edgeless beats GSM
GSM — grams per square meter — measures pile density, and higher is generally plusher. It is also the number everyone quotes and it is not the one that causes damage.
The stitched polyester border on a conventional towel is harder than the microfiber around it and considerably harder than clear coat. Drag that border across a panel with a little pressure and it leaves a mark. Edgeless towels — where the edge is laser-cut or ultrasonically sealed — remove that failure mode entirely, which is why it is the first thing to look for.
500 GSM, edgeless, and the towel most detailers end up buying in bulk. Edgeless matters more than the GSM figure: a stitched border is the single most common source of a scratch on an otherwise careful job.
Who should skip it. Drying a whole car. At 16 x 16 in these are buffing and detailing towels, and you would need a stack of them to dry a sedan.

What works
Edgeless, which removes the most common scratch source
Twelve towels at a price that means you stop rationing them. The single biggest towel mistake is re-using a dirty one because the clean ones are in the wash, and a twelve pack fixes that more effectively than a better towel would.
Who should skip it. Final buffing on dark paint, where an edgeless premium towel is genuinely softer and leaves fewer marks.

What works
Twelve towels means never re-using a dirty one
Good general-purpose weight
Cheap enough to relegate old ones to wheels
What does not
Stitched border rather than edgeless
Chemical Guys does not publish a GSM figure we could verify
Perfectly good general-purpose towels available in every auto parts store, which is their main advantage. Nothing here is best in class and nothing needs to be — these are for wax removal, interiors and glass.
Who should skip it. Paint-critical work on dark cars. The stitched edge and the modest pile mean a premium edgeless towel is a genuine upgrade for final buffing.

Meguiar's publishes neither size nor GSM we could verify
Thirty-six cheap towels for wheels, door jambs, engine bays and anything else that would ruin a good towel. Keeping a stack of these is what stops people using their paint towels on a wheel arch.
Who should skip it. Paint. The pile is short and the edges are stitched; these are shop rags with a microfiber label, and they belong nowhere near a clear coat.

Color code them, on day one
The fastest way to ruin a good microfiber towel is to use it on a wheel once. Brake dust is metallic, it embeds in the pile, and no wash removes it — that towel will scratch paint forever afterwards and you will not be able to tell by looking.
One color for paint only. Buffing wax, final wipes, drying aids.
A second color for interiors. Dashboards, trim, leather.
A third for glass, because glass towels want to stay free of any product residue.
A fourth, cheap, for wheels, jambs and engine bays. These never rejoin the rotation.
05
When to retire one
It has been on a wheel. Immediately, no exceptions.
It no longer grabs. Run it over your palm — microfiber that has lost its grab has lost its structure.
It has picked up something sharp. A towel dropped on a driveway has grit in it you cannot see.
The edge is fraying on a bordered towel. That is the part that scratches.

Questions people actually ask
What GSM microfiber towel is best for cars?
400 to 600 GSM for paint work, 300 to 400 for interiors, and 200 to 300 for glass. More useful than the GSM number is whether the towel is edgeless — the stitched border is what causes most towel-related scratches.
Why are edgeless microfiber towels better?
The stitched polyester border on a conventional towel is harder than clear coat, so dragging it across a panel with pressure leaves a mark. Edgeless towels have a laser-cut or ultrasonically sealed edge, which removes that failure mode entirely.
How do you wash microfiber towels?
Warm water, a small amount of liquid detergent, no fabric softener and no dryer sheets — both permanently coat the fibers and kill absorbency. Wash separately from cotton, which sheds lint into microfiber. Tumble dry low or air dry.
Can you use the same microfiber towel on wheels and paint?
No. Brake dust is metallic, it embeds in the pile permanently, and no wash removes it. A towel that has been on a wheel will scratch paint forever afterwards and you cannot tell by looking. Color code them from day one.
