How to detail your car exterior

A full exterior detail is a weekend. Here is the whole thing with honest timings, and the shorter version for when a weekend is not available.

How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Research-basedPicked from published specifications and the pattern across verified-purchase reports. We have not used these ourselves and do not pretend otherwise. How we pick

An exterior detail covers everything from the wheels to the glass. Done fully with correction it is a weekend; done as maintenance it is a long morning. The first question is which one your car actually needs.

What a full exterior detail uses

A foam cannon, an iron remover, a polisher and a durable wax. Prices are live from Amazon.

MJJC make the cannon that the rest of the market is measured against, and the S V3.0 produces foam that genuinely clings rather than sliding. Brass internals and a quarter-inch quick connector mean it fits almost any consumer pressure washer.

Who should skip it. Anyone without a pressure washer. A cannon needs the pressure and flow a machine produces, and on a garden hose it does nothing at all.

A color-change iron remover that works fast and smells less offensive than most — which sounds trivial until you have sprayed a whole car with the alternative. The purple bleed is the reaction dissolving bonded brake dust so a clay bar does not have to tear it out.

Who should skip it. Routine washing. Iron removers are a twice-a-year job, and using one monthly is both wasteful and harder on trim than it needs to be.

What works

What does not

  • A twice-yearly product, not a routine one
  • GYEON does not publish a bottle volume we could verify
  • Must be rinsed before it dries, which limits panel size in sun

A 9mm throw and a 1000W motor put the G9 exactly where most home detailers should be: fast enough to finish a car in an afternoon, short enough in the throw to stay predictable near badges and body lines. It is the machine we would buy if we were buying one machine.

Who should skip it. If you already own a competent 8mm machine, this is not the upgrade you think it is — the extra millimeter of throw will not fix inconsistent results. Put the money into better pads and a second liquid instead. It is also heavier than the G8, and you notice that on vertical panels after an hour.

What works

  • 9mm throw is the best general-purpose compromise on the market
  • 1000W does not bog down under pressure on a cutting pad
  • Griot's lifetime warranty is the strongest in the category
  • Takes the same 5 in plate and 5.5 in pads as everything else

What does not

  • Heavier than the G8, which shows on doors and quarters
  • Noticeably louder at speeds five and six
  • No pad or liquid in the box at this price

845 is a carnauba and polymer hybrid originally formulated for electrical insulators, and it is the most durable thing in this roundup that still calls itself a wax. Six months outdoors is realistic where a pure carnauba manages six weeks.

Who should skip it. Anyone chasing the deepest carnauba glow. 845 looks good rather than spectacular, and it is thin and runny out of the bottle, which takes getting used to.

The maintenance detail, 3 to 4 hours

  1. Wheels and arches, separate tools, 30 minutes. Method.
  2. Pre-rinse and [foam](/washing/best-foam-cannons), dwell, rinse — 20 minutes.
  3. Contact wash with two buckets, 30 minutes. Method.
  4. Final rinse and dry, 20 minutes, blowing the gaps clear first.
  5. Top up protection with a spray sealant or SiO2 spray, 20 minutes.
  6. Dress the tires and trim, 20 minutes.
  7. Glass inside and out, 20 minutes, and last.

The full detail, a weekend

Saturday morning — wash and decontaminate

  1. The maintenance wash above, through the drying step.
  2. [Iron remover](/washing/best-iron-removers) panel by panel, dwell, rinse. 45 minutes.
  3. Bag test. If the paint is still rough, clay it. 60 to 90 minutes.
  4. Dry completely and move the car into shade or a garage.

Saturday afternoon — correct

  1. Tape every edge, badge and body line. 30 minutes, and non-negotiable.
  2. Test a 2 ft section to find your pad and liquid combination. 20 minutes.
  3. Correct the horizontal panels — hood, roof, trunk — while you are freshest. 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Stop when you are tired. Fatigue on a vertical panel is where mistakes happen.

Sunday morning — finish correcting

  1. Vertical panels and bumpers, 2 to 3 hours.
  2. Inspect everything under a light before you call it done.
  3. Remove the tape.

Sunday afternoon — protect and finish

  1. Panel wipe if a coating is going on. 30 minutes.
  2. Apply [protection](/protection/best-paint-sealants), 60 to 90 minutes.
  3. Dress the tires and trim, 20 minutes.
  4. Glass last, 20 minutes.
  5. Leave it dry overnight if you applied a coating.

What people forget

  • Door shuts and jambs. They take ten minutes and they are what separates a detailed car from a washed one.
  • The fuel filler area, which collects more grime than anywhere else on the car.
  • Exhaust tips, which respond dramatically to a metal polish.
  • Under the hood, which does not need to be detailed and does need a wipe of the shuts and the edges.
  • The glass top edge, with the window lowered an inch so the strip in the seal gets cleaned.

Questions people actually ask

How long does it take to detail a car exterior?
Three to four hours for a maintenance detail, five to six if the paint needs decontaminating, and a full weekend if it needs correcting. The correction is what turns a long morning into two days.
Can you detail a car in one day?
A maintenance detail easily, and a decontamination detail comfortably. A full correction compressed into one day usually means correcting while tired, which is exactly when mistakes happen on vertical panels and edges.
What is the difference between a wash and a detail?
A wash removes loose dirt. A detail also removes bonded contamination, corrects defects if needed, applies protection, and covers the areas a wash skips — door shuts, jambs, trim, glass edges and wheels properly.
Do you need to decontaminate every time you detail?
No. Chemical and mechanical decontamination are twice-a-year jobs, triggered by the bag test rather than a schedule. Doing them more often than the paint needs costs clear coat and achieves nothing.
