How often should you wax your car?

Test it rather than scheduling it. A thirty-second water test tells you more than any interval on a bottle.

How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Research-basedPicked from published specifications and the pattern across verified-purchase reports. We have not used these ourselves and do not pretend otherwise. How we pick

Every answer to this question that comes as a fixed interval is wrong, because protection does not wear on a calendar. It wears according to UV exposure, heat, what the car is washed with, and how thinly it was applied in the first place.

The test that replaces the schedule

  1. Wash a panel and rinse it.
  2. Spray it with water from a hose.
  3. Watch what the water does.
  4. Tight beads that stand up and run off: the protection is working. Leave it.
  5. Water spreading into a flat sheet that clings: it has gone. Reapply.

845 is a carnauba and polymer hybrid originally formulated for electrical insulators, and it is the most durable thing in this roundup that still calls itself a wax. Six months outdoors is realistic where a pure carnauba manages six weeks.

Who should skip it. Anyone chasing the deepest carnauba glow. 845 looks good rather than spectacular, and it is thin and runny out of the bottle, which takes getting used to.

What works

  • Comfortably the longest-lasting wax here
  • Genuinely cheap per application
  • Excellent in winter and on cars that live outdoors

What does not

  • Thin and runny — easy to over-apply on the first try
  • Less depth than a dedicated show carnauba
  • Collinite does not publish a bottle volume we could verify

Power Lock Plus is the durability benchmark among consumer sealants, and it applies as easily as anything here — thin coat, short cure, wipe off. If the goal is to protect a car properly and not think about it for six months, this is the product.

Who should skip it. Carnauba warmth. A polymer sealant looks sharp and glassy, and on dark paint some people genuinely prefer the softer carnauba look.

Bead Maker blurs the line between detail spray and sealant: it sprays on like a quick detailer and the beading survives months rather than weeks. For the effort involved it is the best protection-per-minute product on this page.

Who should skip it. Clay lubrication, where a plain detailer is cheaper and does the same job. Bead Maker is protection, and using it as a lubricant is expensive.

Ultimate Liquid Wax is a synthetic that can be applied in direct sun and wiped off whenever you get around to it, neither of which is true of most waxes. For anyone who has ever fought a hazed, half-dried panel, that alone is the reason to buy it.

Who should skip it. Carnauba warmth on dark paint. This is a synthetic and it looks like one — sharp and clean rather than deep.

Five things that strip protection faster than time

  1. Dish soap and strong detergents. One wash with dish soap removes most of a carnauba layer.
  2. Automatic washes. Brush washes abrade it off; touchless washes use strong chemistry that dissolves it.
  3. Wheel cleaner overspray. Strongly alkaline or acidic products landing on lower panels strip protection in a stripe.
  4. Heat. A black car in summer sun reaches temperatures that soften carnauba directly.
  5. Applying over a dirty or unprotected surface. A layer applied over old failing wax leaves when the old wax does.

Which is why a pH-neutral shampoo is worth more to your protection than upgrading the wax.

Making it last longer

  • Apply thinly. A thin even coat lasts as long as a thick one and removes far more easily.
  • Apply to genuinely clean, decontaminated paint, so the layer bonds to clear coat rather than to old product.
  • Top up with [a protectant detail spray](/protection/best-detail-spray) as a drying aid on every wash.
  • Park in shade where you can. UV is the main clock on any protection layer.
  • Wash regularly. Counter-intuitive, but road film and bird droppings degrade protection faster than careful washing does.

Questions people actually ask

How often should you wax your car?
When the beading stops, not on a schedule. In practice a pure carnauba lasts four to six weeks outdoors, a hybrid around six months and a sealant four to eight months. The thirty-second water test is more reliable than any interval.
Can you wax a car too often?
You cannot damage paint by waxing it, and you can waste a great deal of product and time. Waxing a panel that still beads adds a layer over a layer that was already working. Test first.
Does waxing in winter help?
Yes, and it matters more than in summer. Road salt is corrosive and a protected surface releases it far more readily. A durable hybrid or sealant applied before winter is one of the more useful things you can do for a car.
What strips wax off a car fastest?
Dish soap, automatic car washes, wheel cleaner overspray on lower panels, and heat. One wash with dish soap removes most of a carnauba layer, which is why a pH-neutral shampoo is worth more than upgrading the wax itself.
