How to clean wheels and tires

Wheels first, cool, one at a time, and never with the tools that touch your paint. The order here is not a preference.

How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Research-basedPicked from published specifications and the pattern across verified-purchase reports. We have not used these ourselves and do not pretend otherwise. How we pick

Wheels are the dirtiest part of a car and they are cleaned with the strongest chemicals anyone puts on it. The routine below is built around three rules: wheels first, wheels cool, and wheel tools never touch paint.

The three rules

  1. Wheels before the car. Overspray and brake dust landing on freshly washed paint is a problem; landing on paint you are about to wash is not.
  2. Cool wheels, in the shade, one at a time. Every wheel chemistry stains or etches if it flashes dry on a hot rim.
  3. Separate everything. Separate bucket, separate brushes, separate towels. Brake dust is metallic and it embeds in wash media permanently.

What this routine uses

A cleaner, barrel brushes, a tire brush and a dressing. Prices are live from Amazon.

Non-acidic, color-changing, and it dissolves bonded brake dust rather than relying on you to scrub it off. Safe on painted, clear-coated and anodized wheels, which covers essentially every modern car.

Who should skip it. Baked-on neglect. Even the best chemical cleaner needs a brush for a wheel that has not been touched in two years, and expecting a spray to do it alone is how people conclude nothing works.

Three lengths, up to 18 in, with soft synthetic wool that will not scratch a painted wheel. The barrel is where brake dust lives and where almost nobody reaches, and this is the tool that changes that.

Who should skip it. Value shoppers. These are the most expensive brushes here, and a cheaper long brush gets most of the way there.

A stiff brush shaped to follow the tire sidewall. Tires need real scrubbing to remove old dressing and blooming, and using your soft wheel brush for that is how a soft wheel brush stops being soft.

Who should skip it. Wheels of any kind. It is deliberately stiff and it will mark a painted rim.

Endurance is the benchmark glossy tire dressing: it survives several washes, which most wet-look products do not. It slings if you apply it thickly and drive straight away — two thin coats with ten minutes between essentially eliminates that.

Who should skip it. A satin, factory look. This is a gloss product and it looks like one, which some people dislike on a modern car.

The sequence, one wheel at a time

  1. Rinse the wheel and the arch to remove loose dust and wet the surface.
  2. Spray the cleaner on the face, the spokes and into the barrel. Be generous into the barrel, which is where the dust actually is.
  3. Let it dwell — follow the product, usually one to three minutes — and never let it dry.
  4. Barrel first with a long brush, rotating it to cover the full circumference.
  5. Face and spokes with a soft brush.
  6. Spoke gaps and around the caliper with an angled or flexible brush.
  7. Tire last, with a stiff brush and an APC at around 10:1 if there is old dressing or blooming on it.
  8. Rinse everything thoroughly, including behind the spokes and the arch.
  9. Move to the next wheel, and only then.

Dressing the tires

  1. Dry the tire completely. Dressing on a wet sidewall will not bond and will sling.
  2. Apply with a foam applicator pad, not a trigger spray — spray goes on the paint and the rotors.
  3. One thin coat, worked into the sidewall.
  4. Ten minutes, then a second thin coat if you want more gloss.
  5. Wipe excess, and let it flash ten minutes before driving.

The reasoning is on how to apply tire shine without sling.

Making next time faster

  • Coat the wheels. A wheel coating or an SiO2 spray on clean dry wheels turns a twenty-minute job into five.
  • Clean them weekly. Brake dust that has not baked on comes off with a pH-neutral cleaner and a brush.
  • Rinse the arches whenever you rinse the car, even on a quick wash.
  • Keep the wheel kit together in its own bucket, so the separate-tools rule is easy rather than virtuous.

What to do about baked-on brake dust

Brake dust that has been through heat cycles bonds into the clear coat on the wheel exactly as it bonds into paint. An iron-dissolving cleaner with a long dwell is the first attempt; a second application is often needed on a neglected wheel.

If it survives two applications, the wheel can be clayed with a dedicated clay bar and plenty of lubricant, and then — if the finish is painted and sound — lightly polished. That is a restoration job rather than a cleaning one, and it is worth doing once before coating the wheel so it never gets back there.

Questions people actually ask

Should you clean wheels before or after washing the car?
Before, always. Wheel cleaner overspray and brake dust landing on freshly washed paint is a problem; landing on dirty paint you are about to wash is not. Use a separate bucket, separate brushes and separate towels.
Can you clean wheels with the same bucket as the car?
No. Brake dust is metallic and it embeds in wash media permanently, so a mitt or towel used on a wheel will scratch paint forever afterwards. Keep a complete separate kit, ideally stored in its own bucket.
How do you clean the inside barrel of a wheel?
A soft brush of at least 15 in, rotated as you work so you cover the whole circumference, with cleaner sprayed generously into the barrel first. Nothing shorter physically reaches, and the barrel is where most of the brake dust is.
How do you get baked-on brake dust off wheels?
An iron-dissolving cleaner with a long dwell, applied twice if needed. If it survives that, clay the wheel with plenty of lubricant and — on a sound painted finish — polish it lightly. Then coat it so it does not get back there.
