Independent picks for detailing your own car. We stock nothing, so we have nothing to move.
Ceramic & graphene
Durability claims in this category are the least reliable numbers in detailing. Here is what the tiers actually are, and which one your car wants.

Our top pick in this section: the Gtechniq Gtechniq Crystal Serum Light.
How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

Everything sold as a ceramic coating falls into one of three tiers, and the gap between them is far larger than the marketing suggests. Buying across tiers by accident is the most expensive mistake in this category, because the labor is the same and only one of them lasts.
| Tier | What it is | Realistic life | Prep required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spray / SiO2 topper | A silica-rich spray you mist on and buff off | Weeks to a few months | A clean, decontaminated panel. 20 minutes. |
| Consumer coating | A true coating in a bottle with an applicator | Months to a year or two | Wash, decon, usually a light polish. Half a day. |
| Prosumer coating | The same chemistry professionals install | Multiple years, if the prep was right | Full correction, panel wipe, controlled conditions. A weekend. |
A spray coating is not a weak version of a real coating — it is a different product doing a different job. It is the right answer for a leased car, a daily driver you wash weekly, or anyone who would rather spend twenty minutes four times a year than nine hours once. Our picks are in the ceramic spray roundup.
There is no industry standard test behind a coating's claimed life. A number on a bottle is a manufacturer's own figure, generated under their own conditions, and it assumes a level of prep and aftercare that most installations do not get. We print the claimed figure because it is the published spec, we attribute it, and we say plainly that it is a claim rather than a measurement.
What genuinely moves durability is not the bottle. It is whether the paint was polished and panel-wiped before application, whether the coating cured without rain or dew touching it, and what the car gets washed with afterwards. A nine-year coating washed weekly with dish soap behaves like a six-month one.
Graphene coatings are silica coatings with graphene oxide added. The marketing claims are better heat dissipation, reduced water spotting and a different, flatter gloss. Those claims are not absurd — graphene oxide genuinely has unusual thermal properties — but nobody has published controlled, independent testing that isolates the effect on a car panel.
Phase 0 research found no competitor page in this niche that treats graphene honestly at all, which is why graphene vs ceramic exists. The short version: pick a graphene product if you like the way it beads and sheets, not because you expect it to outlive a comparable silica coating. On price and ease of application they are close enough that the decision is genuinely a preference.
The thing nobody selling coatings tells you is that a coated car needs a different maintenance routine, and the wrong routine strips the benefit inside a year. Wax-bearing shampoos leave a film that dulls the hydrophobic behavior people pay for. Automatic car washes with brushes mar the coating like they mar paint.
The full routine is on ceramic coating maintenance — a page that exists because every competitor in this space sells the coating and then stops talking.
