The verdict
Own two: a pack of microfiber applicators for wax and sealant, which absorb far less product than foam, and a suede-wrapped block if you are applying a ceramic coating. Those are not interchangeable and the coating case is the one that actually matters.

CarPro Ceramic Coating Applicator Kit
Best for: The only correct way to apply a ceramic coating
A coating applied with a foam pad soaks into the pad and goes on unevenly; a suede-wrapped block lays it down in a controlled, visible line. This kit includes the block, the suede and the leveling towels, which is the complete set for one install.
Who should skip it. Wax and sealant, where cheap foam applicators do the job perfectly well and these are an expensive waste.

What works
The correct applicator for a coating, which matters a great deal
Microfiber applicators absorb far less than foam, which means more of the bottle ends up on the paint instead of inside the pad. Eight in a pack is enough to dedicate one per product and still have spares.
Who should skip it. Heavy paste waxes, where a foam applicator spreads a thick product more easily across a panel.
A kit of foam applicators, which is how they should be bought — one applicator per product is the rule, and a shared pad is how wax ends up contaminated with trim dressing. Cheap, washable, and genuinely consumable.
Who should skip it. Ceramic coatings, which need a suede or microfiber applicator block rather than open-cell foam. Use foam for wax and sealant only.

What works
Enough pads to dedicate one per product
Washable and reusable many times
Hex pattern holds product evenly
What does not
Wrong tool for a ceramic coating
Foam absorbs more product than microfiber
Chemical Guys does not publish a count we could verify
A ceramic coating is a small volume of expensive liquid that has to go down in a thin, even film. Open-cell foam absorbs it — a meaningful fraction of a 30 ml bottle disappears into the pad — and it releases it unevenly, which produces thick and thin patches.
A suede-wrapped block holds the coating on its surface rather than inside it, so you can see a wet line as you lay it down. That visible line is how you know your coverage is even, and it is the single most useful piece of feedback in the whole process. How to apply a ceramic coating covers the technique.
05
Caring for them
Rinse immediately after use, before the product cures in the pad.
Wash with warm water and a little detergent, then squeeze rather than wring.
Air dry fully before storing. Damp foam degrades.
Replace foam annually if you use it regularly — it goes brittle and starts to crumble.
Suede is effectively single-session. Coating cures in it, and a hardened suede applicator will mar paint.
06
What to do with the old ones
Foam applicators that are too tired for paint are perfectly good for applying tire dressing and trim restorer, which is where most of them end up. Mark them and keep them separate — they must never come back.
07
Questions people actually ask
What applicator should you use for a ceramic coating?
A suede-wrapped applicator block. Foam absorbs a meaningful fraction of a small, expensive bottle and releases it unevenly; suede holds the coating on its surface so you can see a wet line and judge your coverage.
Are foam or microfiber applicators better for wax?
Microfiber for liquid wax and sealant, because it absorbs far less product. Foam for paste wax, because it spreads a thick product more easily. Both work; the difference is how much of the bottle ends up inside the pad.
Can you reuse wax applicator pads?
Yes — rinse immediately, wash with warm water and a little detergent, squeeze rather than wring, and air dry fully. Replace foam annually, and never reuse a pad that has had trim or tire dressing on it for paint products.
How many applicator pads do you need?
One per product you use, which usually means three or four. Cross-contamination between wax, sealant and dressing is difficult to undo and the pads cost very little, so dedicating them is the cheap, obvious answer.
