The verdict
Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus for cloth seats. The foam carries the cleaner into the fiber without saturating the foam underneath, which is the problem that actually ruins interior fabric work. Keep Folex for the individual stains it leaves behind.
02
Over-wetting is the real risk
Car seats are fabric over foam over a steel frame, in an enclosed space with limited airflow. Soak the fabric and the water goes into the foam, which holds it for days — and a damp foam seat cushion in a closed car grows mold and smells for weeks.
This is why aerosol and pump foams dominate car upholstery cleaning while liquid cleaners dominate household carpet. The foam delivers surfactant with a fraction of the water.
The foam is the point: it carries the cleaner into the fiber without saturating the padding underneath, which is what causes a car to smell damp for a month. Agitate with a brush, then extract or blot.
Who should skip it. Set-in stains. Foam cleaners lift surface soiling well and old stains barely at all — those want a dedicated spot remover or an extractor.

What works
Foam limits how wet the padding gets
Pleasant citrus rather than a chemical smell
Cheap enough to use generously
What does not
Weak on set-in stains
Needs mechanical agitation to work at all
Still possible to over-wet if you are heavy-handed
An aerosol foam that has been cleaning car interiors since long before detailing was a hobby. It works, it costs almost nothing, and the aerosol foam is genuinely good at not over-wetting.
Who should skip it. Delicate fabrics and Alcantara. It is a fairly strong cleaner and it is not the product for a suede headliner or seat insert.
Folex has an outsized reputation among detailers for a reason: it removes set-in stains that automotive fabric cleaners leave behind, and it does not need rinsing. It is a household product doing a detailing job better than the detailing products.
Who should skip it. General cleaning. It is a spot treatment and using it across a whole carpet is wasteful and unnecessary.

No. 04Meguiar'sSpec-verified
Meguiar's Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner
Best for: A middle ground between foam and spot treatment
A conventional spray cleaner that handles both general soiling and moderate stains, which saves owning two products. Less controlled than an aerosol foam and more capable than one.
Who should skip it. Over-wetting worriers. A trigger spray puts down more liquid than aerosol foam, and on thick carpet you need to be disciplined about how much you use.

01Vacuum thoroughly first, including the seams and under the seats. Wet dirt is far harder to remove than dry dirt.
02Test an inconspicuous area — under a seat, behind a bolster — especially on colored fabric.
03Apply foam to one section, roughly the size of a seat base.
04Agitate with a [soft brush](/interior/best-detailing-brushes). This is where the cleaning happens; the chemical only loosens.
05Blot with a clean microfiber towel, pressing firmly to lift the suspension out.
06Repeat on heavy areas rather than soaking once.
07Dry with the windows open, or a fan, until the foam is completely dry to the touch at depth.
05
Alcantara and suede
These are not fabric in the ordinary sense and they do not tolerate the above. Light foam, a soft brush, minimal moisture, and lift with a dry towel — never soak, never press, and never use a dressing on them.
A matted Alcantara surface is usually oil from hands rather than dirt. A gentle cleaner and patient light brushing in one direction restores the nap; aggressive scrubbing permanently flattens it.
06
Stains the foam will not touch
Set-in organic stains — coffee, food — want an oxy spot cleaner rather than a general foam.
Oil and grease need a solvent-based spot treatment; oxy chemistry does nothing for them.
Ink and dye transfer are often permanent on light fabric, and aggressive attempts spread them.
Anything that has been there for years will usually improve rather than disappear. Say so to yourself before you start.

Questions people actually ask
What is the best upholstery cleaner for car seats?
Chemical Guys Foaming Citrus for general cloth-seat cleaning — the foam carries cleaner into the fiber without saturating the foam underneath. Keep Folex alongside it for the individual set-in stains a general cleaner leaves behind.
How do you clean car seats without soaking them?
Use a foam rather than a liquid, vacuum thoroughly first, agitate with a soft brush, and blot firmly with a microfiber towel rather than adding more product. Then dry with the windows open or a fan until the fabric is dry at depth.
Why does my car smell after cleaning the seats?
The foam underneath the fabric is still wet. Car seats are fabric over foam in an enclosed space with poor airflow, so water that gets into the cushion stays for days. Use less liquid, blot more, and dry the car open afterwards.
Can you clean Alcantara with upholstery cleaner?
Only very gently. Alcantara needs light foam, a soft brush, minimal moisture and lifting with a dry towel. Soaking and scrubbing permanently flatten the nap, and a dressing of any kind ruins the surface.
