Our top pick: the METROVAC METROVAC Air Force Blaster Sidekick Car Dryer.
How this is funded: we earn an Amazon commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. We sell nothing and stock nothing, so a pick is never a product we are trying to move. Prices are pulled live from Amazon and were last checked October 5, 2026; where we cannot verify a price we say so rather than print an old one. Full disclosure.

The verdict
Start with the Metro Vac Sidekick. It is the compact one, it clears the trapped water from mirrors, badges and grilles that otherwise ruins a dry panel, and it costs a fraction of the full-size machines. Only step up to an Air Cannon or a Master Blaster if you intend to replace the towel entirely.

What a blower is actually solving
Two separate problems, and only one of them is obvious.
The drips. Water trapped behind mirrors, in badge recesses, under trim and in panel gaps runs out ten minutes after you have dried the car, down a dry panel, leaving spots. A blower clears it in thirty seconds.
The contact. If the blower dries the whole car, no towel touches the paint at all — which eliminates the last common source of wash marring on an otherwise careful job.
The first problem is worth solving for most people at compact-blower money. The second is a genuine luxury, and it is worth it specifically on a car you have corrected and coated.

A compact unit, a full-size portable, a wall-mounted machine and a vacuum-blower combination. Prices are live from Amazon.

METROVAC Air Force Blaster Sidekick Car Dryer
Best for: Touch-free drying without the full-size price
A dedicated car dryer blows water out of mirrors, badges, grilles and trim — the places that drip onto a dry panel ten minutes after you finish. The Sidekick is the compact one, and it is the sensible entry point into touch-free drying.
Who should skip it. Drying an entire car on its own. It is a supplement to a towel at this size; the full-size blowers are the ones that genuinely replace one.

What works
Clears the trapped water that ruins a dry panel
Compact and genuinely portable
Filtered air, so it does not blow grit at the paint
What does not
Not powerful enough to dry a whole car alone
METROVAC does not publish a motor figure we could verify
Enough airflow to dry a whole car without touching it, which eliminates the single most common source of wash marring. If you have corrected a car and coated it, this is the purchase that protects that work.
Who should skip it. Anyone who has not already fixed their wash technique. Drying touch-free is the last 10% of paint safety, and the two bucket method is the first 60% for a fraction of the cost.

The most powerful dryer here, wall-mounted so it is always ready rather than always being dragged out. For anyone drying cars every week in their own garage, the convenience of a mounted unit is the actual feature.
Who should skip it. Renters, apartments or anyone who needs portability. It is also the most expensive item in this entire category by some margin.

A 4.0 peak horsepower machine that vacuums the interior and then reverses to blow the exterior dry, which removes a separate purchase. Built in the US to a standard that is obvious as soon as you pick it up.
Who should skip it. Budget buyers, or anyone who needs wet pickup. It is the most expensive vacuum here and it does not do wet.

01Start with the gaps. Mirrors, badges, grille, door shuts, fuel filler, light surrounds.
02Then panels, top down, holding the nozzle a few inches off the surface at a shallow angle so you push the water rather than atomize it.
03Follow the water, do not chase it. Sweep in one direction and let the sheet run off the panel edge.
04Finish with a towel if needed. Even with a blower, a quick pass with a plush towel catches what is left — and the paint is nearly dry by then, which is the safe moment.
05Blow out the wheels and arches last, with the nozzle well away from the paint.
On a coated car this matters more rather than less: water sheets off so readily that blowing it clear is faster, and a coated panel that spots is usually a drip from a gap rather than anything wrong with the coating. See ceramic coating maintenance.

Questions people actually ask
Are car dryers worth it?
For clearing trapped water from mirrors, badges and panel gaps, a compact unit is worth it for most people. For replacing the drying towel entirely, a full-size blower makes sense specifically on a car you have corrected and coated, where avoiding contact is the point.
Can you use a leaf blower to dry a car?
It will dry the car and it will also fire garden grit at your paint — leaf blowers have no filtration. A dedicated car dryer filters the air, which is the main reason it costs more than a leaf blower that moves the same volume.
Does blowing a car dry prevent water spots?
It helps a great deal, because water spots form when standing water evaporates and leaves minerals behind. Clearing the water quickly, including the trapped water that drips out later, is the most effective prevention short of filtered water.
Do you still need a towel if you have a car dryer?
Usually for a final pass. A blower gets the car 90% dry very quickly, and a plush towel catches the rest — at which point the paint is almost dry and the risk of marring is far lower than it would have been.
